Ocellated Antbird

The Ocellated Antbird, scientifically classified as Phaenostictus mcleannani, is a specialized passerine bird endemic to the humid forests of Central America and northwestern South America. It was first described by the ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence in 1860, named in honor of John McLean, who collected the type specimen in the Panama Canal Zone. As a member of the Thamnophilidae family, its evolutionary path is defined by its obligate relationship with army ant swarms, which flush out the insects and small invertebrates upon which the bird feeds.

The bird’s distinctive physical characteristics, including its notched tail and rounded wings, are functional adaptations to the dense, low-light understory of its tropical habitat. The 'ocellated' name refers to the bold, dark spots—or ocelli—that adorn its plumage, a pattern that provides effective camouflage amidst the dappled light of the forest floor. These birds are rarely seen away from the ant columns they follow, reflecting a highly sedentary and specialized lifestyle that has made them a subject of intense study for behavioral ecologists interested in commensal relationships in nature.
