Ocellated Tapaculo

The Ocellated Tapaculo, Acropternis orthonyx, is a distinctive member of the Rhinocryptidae family, native to the humid montane forests of the Andes in South America. Identified in the 19th century, it was categorized alongside other tapaculos, which are primarily terrestrial, ground-dwelling birds known for their elusive nature and distinctive, often ventriloquial vocalizations. Its specific name, orthonyx, refers to the notable structure of its feet, which are adapted for the rugged, steep terrain of its high-altitude habitat.

The design of the Ocellated Tapaculo is characterized by its cryptic, mottled plumage, which provides excellent camouflage against the mossy forest floor. It features a robust, rounded wing and tail shape, facilitating short, fluttery flights through dense undergrowth rather than sustained aerial navigation.
