Ochre-collared Piculet

The Ochre-collared Piculet, or Picumnus temminckii, is a diminutive member of the woodpecker family native to the Atlantic Forest regions of South America. Named in honor of the Dutch ornithologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck, the species was formally described during the nineteenth century, a period marked by intense European efforts to document and categorize the biodiversity of the Neotropics. Its biological design, characterized by an exceptionally short tail and rounded wings, reflects a specialized evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the dense, tangled undergrowth of the forest sub-canopy.

The species is distinguished by its namesake ochre-colored collar and a mottled plumage that provides effective camouflage against the bark of small branches and bamboo stalks. Unlike many of its larger relatives that excavate deep holes, this bird often utilizes existing cavities or excavates small nests in decaying wood.
