Painted Manakin

The Painted Manakin, Machaeropterus eckelberryi, was formally described as a distinct species in 2017. Native to the sand-forests of the upper Amazon basin in Peru, its existence had long been suspected by field ornithologists before DNA analysis and vocalization studies confirmed its separation from the Striped Manakin. The species is named in honor of Don Eckelberry, a noted American bird artist whose precise illustrations played a crucial role in documenting Neotropical biodiversity during the mid-20th century.

The bird is defined by its unique morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a distinctively pointed tail, which contribute to its specialized display maneuvers. Its discovery highlights the ongoing process of identifying avian diversity within remote tropical corridors. Because it was only recently identified, the bird serves as a modern emblem for conservation efforts in the Peruvian Amazon, where researchers focus on protecting its highly specific and localized habitat.
