Pale-vented Pigeon

The Pale-vented Pigeon, scientifically classified as Patagioenas cayennensis, is a species native to the neotropics, ranging from southern Mexico through Central America and into much of South America. It is a member of the diverse Columbidae family, evolving to occupy a variety of habitats including forest edges, riverine galleries, and secondary growth. Its evolutionary design, characterized by rounded wings and a distinctively square tail, facilitates agile navigation through complex arboreal environments.

First formally described by ornithologist Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre in 1792, the species is recognized by its vinaceous-brown plumage and the pale, often whitish or grayish, coloration of its undertail coverts. As a widespread species, it has been a subject of interest for naturalists documenting the biodiversity of the Americas. Its morphology reflects an adaptation to a diet primarily composed of fruits and berries, maintaining a role in local ecosystems as a seed disperser across its extensive range.
