Pale-winged Starling

The Pale-winged Starling, known scientifically as Onychognathus nabouroup, is a species native to the arid regions of southwestern Africa, including parts of Namibia, South Africa, and Angola. Within its natural habitat, it is frequently associated with rocky terrain and mountain outcrops, where it utilizes crevices for nesting. Ornithologically, it was first formally described by the naturalist Louis Fraser in 1844, emerging from the mid-19th-century era of European biological cataloging of Southern African fauna.

The bird is easily identified by the distinct chestnut-colored panels on its wings, which become strikingly apparent during flight, contrasting against its iridescent black plumage. The species possesses a pointed wing shape and a characteristic notched tail, physical traits that have evolved to facilitate agile maneuverability within its mountainous environment. It is widely regarded by field ornithologists as a social species, often observed in small flocks and noted for its habit of foraging near human settlements or in proximity to larger mammals.
