Passenger Pigeon

The passenger pigeon, Ectopistes migratorius, was once the most abundant bird in North America, with a population estimated in the billions before its sudden decline. The species was characterized by its rapid flight and nomadic tendencies, evolving to exploit the vast, shifting mast resources of the eastern deciduous forests. By the mid-19th century, intensive commercial hunting and the systematic destruction of their woodland nesting habitats drove the population toward a precipice from which it could not recover.

The extinction of the species is attributed to the intersection of industrial-scale trapping and the expansion of the American frontier. While naturalists of the era, such as John James Audubon, initially marveled at their immense flocks, the subsequent commercial commodification of the bird as a cheap food source proved catastrophic. The final known member of the species, famously named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914, serving as a permanent, somber milestone in the history of human-induced extinction and the birth of modern conservation ethics.
