Victoria Crowned-Pigeon

The Victoria Crowned-Pigeon, named in honor of Queen Victoria, was formally described by the ornithologist John Gould in 1844. Native to the lowlands of New Guinea and surrounding islands, the species occupies a distinct place in the family Columbidae. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense European exploration in the Pacific, where the bird's striking blue-grey plumage and elaborate, lace-like crest immediately captured the attention of nineteenth-century naturalists.

The species is distinguished by its rounded wing and tail morphology, physical traits that facilitate maneuverability within the dense understory of its forest habitat. Ornithologists often cite these characteristics as an evolutionary adaptation to life on the forest floor rather than prolonged flight.
