Plain-backed Sparrow

The Plain-backed Sparrow, or Passer flaveolus, is a species native to Southeast Asia, ranging across countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. It was formally described by the French naturalist Edward Blyth in the mid-19th century, a period marked by extensive Western exploration of Asian avian biodiversity. Unlike many of its urban-dwelling relatives, this sparrow is typically found in scrublands, agricultural areas, and open woodlands where it maintains a somewhat more elusive profile.

The species is distinguished by the lack of the bold, dark streaks typically found on the mantles of many other sparrow species, which serves as a primary identifying trait for birders and taxonomists. Its rounded wings and notched tail are evolutionary adaptations for short, agile flights through dense shrubbery and secondary forest growth. While it has not been the subject of specific design or artistic focus, it remains a notable example of the subtle, refined plumage variations found within the Passeridae family.
