Plain-breasted Ground Dove

The Plain-breasted Ground Dove, Columbina minuta, is a small neotropical bird native to a range extending from Mexico through much of South America. It was scientifically described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766, emerging during a period of intense European categorization of global biodiversity. These doves are primarily ground-dwellers, favoring open, grassy habitats and scrublands where their muted coloration provides essential camouflage against predators.

The physical design of the species is characterized by a compact, rounded wing shape and a distinctively square tail, adaptations that support short, rapid bursts of flight rather than long-distance migration. Ornithological studies emphasize its modest plumage, which serves a functional purpose in its ecosystem, allowing it to forage inconspicuously.
