Red-cheeked Cordonbleu

The Red-cheeked Cordonbleu, scientifically classified as Uraeginthus bengalus, is a species of estrildid finch native to the tropical savannas of sub-Saharan Africa. The species was first formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766, emerging from the early modern period of natural history documentation where European naturalists sought to categorize the vast biodiversity of the African continent. Its specific name, bengalus, reflects an 18th-century misidentification suggesting an origin in Bengal, a common occurrence in colonial-era taxonomy before biogeographical ranges were fully understood.

The bird is distinguished by its characteristic azure-blue plumage and the striking crimson cheek patches found exclusively on the males. Evolutionarily, these features evolved as signals for mate selection and territorial display within the open woodland environments they inhabit. Due to their docile nature and vibrant coloration, they have been documented in aviculture since the 19th century, serving as a primary subject for ornithological illustrations of the era which aimed to capture the iridescent brilliance of tropical fauna for European collections.
