Red-throated Parrotfinch

The Red-throated Parrotfinch (Erythrura psittacea) is a species of estrildid finch endemic to the island of New Caledonia. First described by German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789, it is part of the broader Parrotfinch genus, characterized by vibrant, predominantly green plumage and distinctive bright red facial markings. In its native habitat, the species thrives in forest edges and grasslands, where it relies on a diet primarily composed of grass seeds and fruits.

The species is highly regarded among aviculturists for its striking coloration and active, inquisitive temperament. While populations in the wild are relatively stable, their history in captivity dates back to mid-20th century European and Australian collections, where breeders sought to replicate their specific environmental needs. Their design, characterized by a rounded wing shape and a subtle, notched tail, evolved as an adaptation for agile, short-distance flight through dense island vegetation, a feature that distinguishes them visually from their mainland cousins.
