Red Collared-Dove

The Red Collared-Dove, or Streptopelia tranquebarica, is a small, distinct member of the Columbidae family native to the open woodlands and cultivated landscapes of South and Southeast Asia. Unlike many of its relatives, this species has historically thrived alongside human expansion, moving into agricultural areas where its diet of seeds and grains is easily sustained. It is characterized by its broad wings and square-shaped tail, physical traits that have evolved to facilitate quick, agile bursts of flight in its preferred habitats.

The species was formally described by German naturalist Johann Hermann in 1804. Ornithological documentation from the 19th and 20th centuries highlights its unique coloration, particularly the brick-red plumage of the males, which distinguishes it from the more muted tones of other Streptopelia species. Scientists and birders generally recognize it as a hardy, adaptable bird that maintains stable populations throughout its range, reflecting a long-standing ecological history of successful niche specialization.
