Red-collared Myzomela

The Red-collared Myzomela, scientifically classified as Myzomela rosenbergii, was first described by the German zoologist Hermann Schlegel in 1871. Named after the German naturalist Hermann von Rosenberg, who extensively collected specimens in the Malay Archipelago during the mid-19th century, the species is native to the montane forests of New Guinea. Its classification emerged from the intense period of European biological exploration in the region, where taxonomists sought to categorize the vast diversity of honeyeaters found within the island's isolated high-altitude ecosystems.

The species is distinguished by its unique morphology, characterized by a striking crimson collar contrasted against a dark, velvet-like plumage. Its anatomical features, including the rounded wings and a distinctively notched tail, are specialized adaptations that allow for agile flight through dense tropical canopies.
