Red-faced Cormorant

The red-faced cormorant, scientifically classified as Urile urile, is a seabird native to the northern Pacific regions, specifically the coastal areas of the Aleutian Islands, the Kamchatka Peninsula, and parts of Japan. Unlike migratory species that traverse vast oceans, this bird is primarily a resident of its rugged, rocky nesting grounds. Its biological evolution is intrinsically tied to these harsh maritime environments, where its streamlined body and pointed wings provide the necessary agility for deep-sea diving, while its long tail assists in underwater maneuvering.

The bird was first formally documented by the naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in the late 18th century. Its distinctive physical characteristic—the patches of bare, red skin around its eyes and bill—sets it apart from other members of the cormorant family. These features, while functional for social signaling and courtship, have long captured the interest of ornithologists who study the adaptations of cliff-nesting birds.
