Red-faced Guan

The Red-faced Guan, Penelope dabbenei, is a cracid bird species endemic to the humid montane forests of the southern Andes, primarily inhabiting regions across northwestern Argentina and southeastern Bolivia. It was formally described in 1895 by the ornithologist Hellmayr and Coombes, named in honor of the collector Roberto Dabbene. As a member of the Cracidae family, its evolution reflects a long history of adaptation to dense forest understories, where its distinct morphology serves both as a survival mechanism and a primary identifier for researchers studying Neotropical avian biodiversity.

Physically, the species is distinguished by the vibrant red skin surrounding its eyes and the characteristic rounded wing and tail shapes that facilitate agile maneuvering through its cluttered habitat.
