Ruddy-headed Goose

The ruddy-headed goose, or Chloephaga rubidiceps, is a distinctive waterfowl species native to the southern reaches of South America. Historically, these geese were split into two primary populations: one migratory group breeding on the Falkland Islands and a mainland population residing in the windswept pampas of Tierra del Fuego and southern Patagonia. The species is characterized by its compact, robust form, featuring broad wings adapted for sustained flight and a characteristic rounded tail that aids in maneuverability across open grasslands and coastal wetlands.

The biological classification and early documentation of the species are tied to the exploration of the Southern Cone during the 19th century. Ornithologists of the period noted the bird for its striking chestnut-colored head—which gives it its common name—and its preference for short-grass habitats. While the species was once abundant throughout its range, contemporary populations have faced significant pressure due to habitat alteration and predation by introduced species, leading conservationists to monitor the mainland population with increasing urgency.
