Where it came from

The Selva Cacique, scientifically known as Cacicus koepckeae, was first described by ornithologist Maria Koepcke in 1964. It is endemic to a highly restricted region of the humid lowland forests in eastern Peru. The species is characterized by its broad wings and distinctive pointed tail, adaptations that facilitate its movement within the dense understory of its habitat.

Named in honor of its discoverer, the bird remains one of the most enigmatic members of the Icteridae family. Given the remote and limited nature of its range, the species was historically difficult to study, leading to its classification as a data-deficient species for many years. It is widely considered a significant indicator species for the health of its specific Andean foothill ecosystem.
