Shelley's Starling

Shelley's Starling, scientifically identified as Lamprotornis shelleyi, was formally described by the ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1895. Named in honor of the British ornithologist George Ernest Shelley, the species is native to the dry woodlands and savanna regions of eastern Africa, specifically spanning areas in Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya. Its identification was part of the broader Victorian-era scientific effort to catalog the distinct avian biodiversity of the African continent, a period defined by extensive exploration and specimen collection by European naturalists.

The bird is distinguished by its iridescent plumage, featuring a vibrant metallic blue-green sheen that is characteristic of the genus Lamprotornis.
