Shy Ground Dove

The Shy Ground Dove, scientifically classified as Pampusana stairi, is a species native to the islands of the South Pacific, including parts of Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga. Historically, these birds evolved in isolation within dense forest habitats, developing a secretive, terrestrial lifestyle that earned them their descriptive common name. They are part of the larger Columbidae family and were formally documented by Western naturalists during the mid-19th century exploration of the Polynesian archipelago, primarily observed for their distinct, shy disposition and elusive behavior near the forest floor.
