Negros Bleeding-heart

The Negros Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba keayi) is a critically endangered ground dove endemic to the islands of Negros and Panay in the Philippines. Scientific documentation of the species began in the late 19th century, with its namesake classification derived from the distinctive, intense crimson-red patch on the chest of the males, which mimics a wound. Like other members of the genus, its evolution is defined by a reliance on the forest floor, characterized by rounded wings and a rounded tail that favor agile, short-burst flight within dense undergrowth rather than long-distance migration.

The bird was formally described by ornithologist W.R. Ogilvie-Grant in 1896, following the expansion of biological surveys in the Philippines during the colonial era. The design of the species is a classic example of island adaptation, where low-intensity flight mechanics evolved in response to the predation pressures and dense foliage of the Visayan rainforests. Historically, the species has been highly elusive, and modern conservation efforts are focused on the protection of remnant secondary-growth forests, as the bird’s aesthetic and biological niche make it a focal point for regional biodiversity advocacy.
