Key West Quail-Dove

The Key West Quail-Dove, known scientifically as Geotrygon chrysia, is a ground-dwelling bird native to the Caribbean, with a range extending from the Bahamas and Cuba to Hispaniola. While it was once recorded as a rare visitor to the Florida Keys in the late 19th century—hence its common name—it is primarily recognized today as a species endemic to the Greater Antilles. Its taxonomic classification was established during the mid-1800s, a period when naturalists were aggressively cataloging the biodiversity of the West Indies.

The bird is distinguished by its distinct physical characteristics, including rounded wings and a rounded tail, which facilitate its movement through dense understory habitats.
