Slate-throated Gnatcatcher

The Slate-throated Gnatcatcher (Polioptila schistaceigula) is a small passerine bird native to the humid forests of Central and South America, particularly in regions spanning from Panama to western Ecuador. It was formally described by the ornithologist Hartert in 1898, marking its recognition as a distinct species within the Polioptilidae family. Its taxonomy has historically been subject to refinement, reflecting the complex evolutionary history of gnatcatchers in Neotropical ecosystems.

The species is characterized by its distinctive slate-grey plumage, rounded wings, and a notched tail, which facilitate its agile movement through dense canopy foliage.
