Slate-throated Redstart

The Slate-throated Redstart (Myioborus miniatus) belongs to the New World warbler family, Parulidae, and is widely distributed across the highlands of the Americas, ranging from Mexico down to Bolivia. It was formally described in 1827 by the French naturalist William Swainson. As a resident species of montane forests, its evolution has been driven by the complex ecological niches of cloud forest environments, where its distinctive slate-grey plumage and vivid red underparts serve as an adaptation to the dappled light and dense understory of its habitat.

The bird's design is characterized by its rounded wings and notched tail, which facilitate the rapid, erratic flight patterns required for its unique 'flushing' foraging technique. By spreading its tail to reveal white outer feathers, the Redstart startles insects from the foliage.
