Sokoke Scops-Owl

The Sokoke Scops-Owl (Otus ireneae) was formally described in 1965, emerging from the scientific exploration of the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest in coastal Kenya. Its existence represents the unique biodiversity of this isolated coastal ecosystem, which serves as one of the last remaining strongholds for several endemic species. The bird's discovery underscored the critical importance of the forest as a habitat refuge, as it remains almost entirely dependent on the specific microclimate and old-growth structure found only within this geographically restricted area.
