Speke's Weaver

Speke's weaver, scientifically classified as Ploceus spekei, was formally described by the English naturalist Philip Sclater in 1861. The species was named in honor of the British explorer John Hanning Speke, who collected the type specimen during his 1857-1859 expedition through East Africa while searching for the source of the Nile. The bird belongs to the Ploceidae family, a group characterized by their remarkable nest-building skills and complex social structures within their native habitats in Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The species is distinguished by its specific anatomical features, including a noticeably broad wing shape and a rounded tail, which are adaptations suited to its specific flight patterns and foraging behavior in open woodland and scrub environments. Taxonomists and ornithologists generally regard the species as a stable member of the genus Ploceus, noting that its design reflects the standard evolutionary traits of weavers that rely on colonial nesting in trees.
