Spot-tailed Nightjar

The Spot-tailed Nightjar was formally described by the ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence in 1862. This species belongs to the family Caprimulgidae and is characterized by its cryptic plumage, which serves as a highly effective camouflage against the forest floor and tree limbs where it rests during the day. Its scientific name, Hydropsalis maculicaudus—often classified as the monotypic genus Antiurus—refers to the distinct white spots found on the retrices of the male, a diagnostic feature used by naturalists to distinguish it from related nightjars in the Neotropics.
