Donaldson Smith's Nightjar

Donaldson Smith's Nightjar was first described by the British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1895. The species was named in honor of Dr. Arthur Donaldson Smith, an American physician and explorer who collected the type specimen during his 1894 expedition through present-day Ethiopia and Somalia. The description was published in the Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club, formalizing the bird's status as a distinct member of the Caprimulgidae family within the arid, scrub-covered landscapes of East Africa.

The bird is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical traits that facilitate the low-altitude, agile flight necessary for its nocturnal insect-hunting behavior. As a member of the nightjar family, it is expertly camouflaged with cryptic, mottled plumage that mimics the leaf litter and bark of its habitat. Because it is primarily active at night and possesses such effective natural camouflage, it remains a challenging subject for field study, representing the elusive and specialized nature of African avifauna discovered during the late nineteenth-century era of exploration.
