Spot-winged Wood-Quail

The Spot-winged Wood-Quail, or Odontophorus capueira, is a species native to the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. It was first formally described by German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix in 1825. As a member of the Odontophoridae family, its evolutionary history is defined by adaptation to dense, humid forest floors where its rounded wings and tail facilitate quick, short-burst flights through tangled undergrowth rather than sustained aerial migration.

The bird's common name derives from the distinct, pale-tipped wing coverts that create a speckled appearance against its darker, chestnut-brown plumage. Ornithological documentation from the 19th and early 20th centuries often featured this species in broader surveys of Neotropical game birds.
