Spur-winged Lapwing

The spur-winged lapwing is a distinct member of the Vanellinae subfamily, primarily inhabiting the wetlands and marshlands of the eastern Mediterranean and sub-Saharan Africa. Historically observed by naturalists since the 18th century, it is named for the sharp, inconspicuous claw—or spur—located on the carpal joint of its wings, which it uses as a defensive weapon.
