Stejneger's Scoter

Stejneger's scoter, scientifically known as Melanitta stejnegeri, is a large sea duck that breeds across eastern Siberia and winters along the coasts of East Asia. It was historically considered a subspecies of the white-winged scoter, but modern taxonomic classification now recognizes it as a distinct species based on behavioral, vocal, and morphological differences, including its unique bill shape and plumage patterns.

The bird is named after the Norwegian ornithologist Leonhard Stejneger, who contributed extensively to the biological exploration of the North Pacific and the Commander Islands during the late 19th century. Its distinctive physical traits, such as its broad wings adapted for sustained flight over marine environments and its characteristically pointed tail, are evolutionary adaptations that allow the species to thrive in turbulent, cold-water coastal habitats.
