Stella's Lorikeet

Stella’s lorikeet, scientifically classified as Charmosyna stellae, is native to the high-altitude mountain forests of New Guinea. It was first described in the late 19th century and is celebrated among ornithologists for its striking plumage and distinct morphological features, specifically its rounded wings and elegantly pointed, elongated tail. These characteristics are typical adaptations for its agile, nectar-feeding lifestyle within dense forest canopies.

The species is named in honor of Stella, the wife of the German ornithologist Carl Hunstein, who explored the interior of New Guinea in the 1880s. The design and coloration of the bird—often featuring vibrant reds and greens—reflect its evolutionary niche as a specialist pollinator. Historically, these birds have been studied primarily in the context of their restricted range and unique dietary requirements, leading to a conservation focus that emphasizes the preservation of their delicate montane habitats.
