Stresemann's Bristlefront

Stresemann's Bristlefront was first described to science in 1843, though it remained notoriously elusive for over a century. Named after the German ornithologist Erwin Stresemann, this member of the tapaculo family is native to the Atlantic forest remnants of Brazil. Its discovery was a testament to the high levels of endemism in the region, highlighting a species that relies on specific, humid understory habitats that have been significantly reduced by deforestation.

The species is distinguished by its unique morphology, including its rounded wings and distinctively notched tail, which facilitate movement through dense, tangled vegetation. For decades, the bird was considered potentially extinct until its rediscovery in the 1990s.
