Sumatran Ground-Cuckoo

The Sumatran Ground-Cuckoo, scientifically known as Carpococcyx viridis, is a rare and elusive bird endemic to the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. First described by Tommaso Salvadori in 1879, the species was historically shrouded in mystery, with many scientists fearing it had gone extinct during a long period in the 20th century where no confirmed sightings were recorded. It is a member of the cuckoo family and is uniquely adapted to a terrestrial lifestyle, featuring distinctively rounded wings and a long, heavy tail that aids in balance while navigating the dense undergrowth of its montane forest habitat.

The bird is characterized by its cryptic plumage and a largely solitary nature, which makes it one of the least observed avian species in Southeast Asia. Design-wise, its physical form—specifically its robust legs and tail structure—reflects an evolutionary shift away from arboreal flight toward ground-based foraging. Following its rediscovery in the late 1990s through camera trap photography, the species has become a focal point for conservation efforts, representing the fragile biodiversity of the Sumatran ecosystem and the ongoing challenge of protecting specialized avian habitats from deforestation.
