Tickell's Blue Flycatcher

Tickell's Blue Flycatcher was formally described by the ornithologist Edward Blyth in 1843. It was named in honor of Colonel Samuel Tickell, a British army officer and naturalist who conducted extensive research on the fauna of India and Burma during the mid-19th century. The species emerged from a period of intense colonial-era documentation, where European naturalists sought to catalog the biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent.

The bird's design is characterized by a striking, deep blue upper body transitioning to a warm, rufous-orange breast, a color palette that serves both as a distinctive aesthetic feature and a functional camouflage within the dappled sunlight of its forest habitat. Its morphological traits, specifically the rounded wings and pointed tail, are evolutionary adaptations that facilitate the species' agile, fly-catching maneuvers, allowing for quick, darting movements to capture insects in mid-air.
