Tit-like Dacnis

The Tit-like Dacnis, Xenodacnis parina, is a unique passerine bird native to the high-altitude Polylepis woodlands of the Andes, primarily within Peru and Bolivia. It was first described in the mid-19th century as a member of the tanager family, Thraupidae, though its distinct morphology—specifically its short, tit-like bill—often caused early taxonomists to debate its precise placement within avian lineages. It evolved to occupy a niche similar to northern hemisphere chickadees, adapting to the harsh, cold environments of the treeline by foraging among the branches of high-elevation endemic trees.
