Tullberg's Woodpecker

Tullberg's woodpecker, scientifically classified as Campethera tullbergi, was formally described by the Swedish zoologist Oscar Sjögren in 1894. The species was named in honor of the Swedish zoologist Tycho Tullberg, reflecting the tradition of late 19th-century ornithology to commemorate peers through taxonomic naming. It is primarily found in the montane forests of Central Africa, specifically within the Albertine Rift and parts of Cameroon and Nigeria, occupying a specialized ecological niche that requires high-altitude forest cover.

The bird is characterized by its broad wings and pointed tail, physical adaptations that facilitate its unique foraging behavior within dense, mossy environments. While it lacks the singular fame of some avian species, it is highly regarded among ornithologists for its cryptic plumage, which allows it to camouflage effectively against the bark of trees.
