Tumbes Hummingbird

The Tumbes hummingbird was first described by the French ornithologist Eugène Simon in 1901. It is a specialized species native to the Tumbes region of northwestern Peru and southwestern Ecuador, evolving within the unique dry forests and scrublands of the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity hotspot. Its distinct morphology, featuring a sharply pointed wing shape and a deeply forked tail, reflects an evolutionary adaptation to its specific environment, allowing for agile flight maneuvers while foraging among the flowering flora of the arid Pacific coastal slope.

Taxonomically recognized as Thaumasius baeri, the species is named in honor of the naturalist Gustave-Adolphe Baer, who collected biological specimens in South America during the turn of the 20th century. While the bird is rarely encountered by casual observers due to its restricted range and the degradation of its habitat, it remains a subject of significant interest within ornithological circles. Its classification and lineage continue to be studied as researchers work to understand the evolutionary history of the Trochilidae family in the isolated pockets of the western Andean slopes.
