Upland Sandpiper

The Upland Sandpiper, scientifically known as Bartramia longicauda, is a member of the Scolopacidae family, evolved for life in the expansive grasslands of North America. Unlike its shorebird relatives, this species occupies a niche in prairie ecosystems, favoring short-grass habitats where its long wings and pointed tail facilitate efficient, graceful flight during its long-distance migration to South America. It was historically named the Bartram's Sandpiper in honor of the American naturalist William Bartram, reflecting the era of 18th-century exploration when many New World species were first formally cataloged and introduced to the scientific community.
