Latham's Snipe

Latham’s Snipe, scientifically classified as Gallinago hardwickii, is a migratory shorebird named in honor of the English ornithologist John Latham. The species is part of the Scolopacidae family and is primarily recognized for its remarkable annual migration between its breeding grounds in Japan and its non-breeding habitats in eastern Australia. Evolutionarily, its physical morphology—specifically its narrow, aerodynamic wings and pointed tail—has been refined over millennia to facilitate high-speed, long-distance flight across the Pacific.

The species was first formally described by John Edward Gray in 1831. Within the context of ornithological history, the bird serves as a critical indicator of wetland health across the East Asian-Australasian Flyway.
