Verreaux's Eagle

Verreaux's eagle, also known as the black eagle, is a large bird of prey native to the rocky landscapes of Southern and Eastern Africa. It was first formally described by French naturalist René Primevère Lesson in 1830, who named the species after his compatriot Jules Verreaux, a noted collector and taxidermist. These eagles have evolved specifically to navigate the mountainous terrain of the region, utilizing the thermal updrafts created by granite cliffs for hunting and soaring.

The species is ecologically defined by its strong preference for hyraxes, which dictate much of the bird's behavioral patterns and territorial nesting habits. Biologically, the eagle is distinguished by its broad, powerful wings and rounded tail, features that allow for precise maneuverability when hunting along cliff faces.
