Western Banded Snake-Eagle

The Western Banded Snake-Eagle, Circaetus cinerascens, is a medium-sized raptor distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. It was first formally described by the German ornithologist Ferdinand von Müller in the 19th century, reflecting the era's intensive European efforts to categorize the biodiversity of the African continent. As a member of the Accipitridae family, it occupies a specialized niche, favoring woodland and riverine habitats where it can hunt its primary prey of snakes and small vertebrates.

The species is characterized by its broad, powerful wings and a distinctively rounded tail, anatomical features that allow for maneuverability in dense forest edges and open canopy clearings. Unlike its more migratory relatives, this bird is generally sedentary. Its evolutionary design prioritizes a low-flight, ambush-predatory style rather than high-soaring flight.
