White-bellied Green-Pigeon

The White-bellied Green-pigeon, scientifically classified as Treron sieboldii, was first described by the Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1835. It is a member of the Columbidae family, native to the temperate and subtropical forests of East Asia, including Japan, Taiwan, and parts of China. Its evolution has favored a distinct plumage that acts as effective camouflage within the dense canopy, where it spends much of its life foraging for fruit.

The species is named in honor of Philipp Franz von Siebold, a German physician and botanist whose extensive natural history collections in Japan significantly contributed to European understanding of Asian biodiversity during the 19th century. Ornithological documentation highlights its unique rounded wing and tail morphology, which are specialized adaptations for maneuverability in cluttered forest environments rather than the long-distance migratory speed seen in other pigeon species.
