The white-bellied hummingbird, known scientifically as Elliotomyia chionogaster, was historically classified within the Amazilia genus before taxonomic revisions repositioned it within its current monotypic genus. Native to the humid forests and scrublands of the Andean foothills, the species was formally described by ornithologist Johann Jakob von Tschudi in the mid-19th century. Its taxonomy reflects the rigorous efforts of 19th-century naturalists to catalog the immense biodiversity of South America, specifically identifying this bird by its distinct lack of iridescent throat plumage compared to its relatives.

The bird's design is defined by evolutionary adaptations suited for rapid, precise movement.
