White-bellied Sholakili

The White-bellied Sholakili, scientifically classified as Sholicola albiventris, is a passerine bird endemic to the high-altitude sky islands of the Southern Western Ghats in India. Identified as a distinct species through modern genetic analysis, it was historically conflated with the Nilgiri Sholakili, a closely related species. It inhabits the unique shola-grassland mosaic ecosystem, a habitat characterized by stunted montane forests sheltered in valleys between rolling grassy hills.

The bird’s physiology, specifically its rounded wings and pointed tail, is an evolutionary adaptation to life within the dense undergrowth and shrub layers of these fragmented forest patches. Because it is highly localized and restricted to specific mountain peaks in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the species is considered highly vulnerable to climate shifts and habitat degradation. Research on the species often focuses on its isolation, as its restricted range serves as a vital indicator of the health of the Western Ghats ecosystem.
