White-rumped Hawk

The white-rumped hawk, scientifically classified as Parabuteo leucorrhous, is a small raptor native to the montane forests of the Andes, stretching from Venezuela down to northern Argentina. It occupies a distinct ecological niche within the Accipitridae family, often inhabiting humid forests and clearings at high altitudes. Its physical characteristics, particularly its broad, rounded wings and rounded tail, have evolved to facilitate agile maneuverability within dense canopy environments rather than the long-distance soaring seen in open-plains raptors.

The species was first described by the French naturalist Jean Frédéric Émile Oustalet in 1891. While it was historically placed in the genus Buteo, its classification has been a subject of ongoing ornithological study, with molecular evidence eventually supporting its placement within the Parabuteo genus alongside the more well-known Harris's hawk. As a forest-dwelling specialist, the bird remains a prized observation for researchers interested in Neotropical biodiversity and the evolutionary adaptations of raptors in complex, high-altitude forest ecosystems.
