White-shouldered Antbird

The White-shouldered Antbird, Akletos melanoceps, is a passerine bird belonging to the family Thamnophilidae, native to the humid forests of the western Amazon basin. Taxonomically, the species was historically classified within the genus Myrmeciza, but it was moved to the genus Akletos following molecular phylogenetic studies that clarified the complex evolutionary relationships among antbirds. This species occupies a specialized ecological niche, typically found in the dense understory where it often follows columns of army ants to prey on the insects flushed out by the swarm.

The bird is distinguished by its distinct physical characteristics, including rounded wings and a characteristically notched tail. The plumage of the male is primarily dark, contrasted by a striking white patch on the shoulder that remains concealed unless the bird is in display or flight.
