White-winged Black-Tit

The White-winged Black-Tit, scientifically known as Melaniparus leucomelas, was formally described by the French ornithologist Eduard Rüppell in the mid-19th century. Part of the Paridae family, this species is native to the wooded savannas and acacia woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. It evolved within the diverse avian ecosystems of the Afrotropic realm, adapting to a life of foraging for insects among the branches of its arboreal habitat.

The bird is distinguished by its deep black plumage contrasted by prominent white wing patches, a feature that provides a striking visual marker during flight. Its physical form is characterized by a rounded wing shape and a distinctly notched tail, adaptations that facilitate agile, short-distance maneuvering through dense canopy foliage. Ornithologists have long noted the species for its complex social behavior and distinctive vocalizations, which remain a primary focus of studies regarding the evolutionary biology of the tit family in East and Southern Africa.
