White-winged Chough

The White-winged Chough, Corcorax melanorhamphos, is a bird species endemic to eastern and south-eastern Australia. It is one of only two members of the family Corcoracidae, a group that represents an ancient lineage of Australian songbirds that evolved in relative isolation. These birds are renowned for their highly social nature, living in cooperative breeding groups where multiple individuals contribute to the care of a single brood, a behavior that has made them a subject of extensive ornithological study regarding evolutionary altruism.

The physical design of the Chough is marked by its broad, rounded wings and a distinctively long, curved black bill, which it uses to forage through leaf litter for insects. Its most notable aesthetic feature, as the name implies, is the patch of white secondary feathers that becomes visible only when the bird takes flight. This stark contrast against its otherwise sooty-black plumage is an adaptation that researchers believe serves as a critical visual signal for flock cohesion, ensuring the group remains synchronized as they traverse their woodland habitats.
