White-winged Cotinga

The White-winged Cotinga, scientifically classified as Xipholena atropurpurea, is an endemic inhabitant of the Atlantic Forest in eastern Brazil. It was first formally described by naturalist Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied in the early 19th century during his extensive expeditions through the region, capturing the attention of European ornithologists who were documenting the unique biodiversity of the South American tropics. The bird evolved as a specialized frugivore, developing a rounded wing and tail morphology that facilitates agile, short-burst maneuvering within the dense canopy layers of its shrinking habitat.
